Got two new books from Christmas that, believe it or not, I have already read. I enjoyed both of them and already passed on Heaven is for Real to both Sarah and Mom. With Dad being gone I am questioning so many things right now and looks as if 2012 is going to be a year for exploring and strengthening my faith.

We had a grand time at the beach visiting with Sarah's family. I spent a lot of time thinking about Dad and special memories. Mom and Dad would have celebrated 43 years of marriage on 11/28/2011. There marriage was a true testament of love, sacrifice, truth, and happiness. I truly hope and believe that Dad is Ok and he is our angel looking down on us and proud of his family in knowing that we are strong enough to stay positive and keep on living! We miss you.

The Passing of a Legacy

My father passed away this morning. He was surrounded by family including you as he took his last breaths. He is now pain and cancer free and in the hands of God.

Grand Dad was a very well respected man who loved his family so much and had a sense of integrity that few people follow these days. We have been very blessed to have this year to spend with family and very thankful his newest Grand boys had the opportunity to meet him. The babies brought a lot of comfort and joy in his last days. He will remember those special memories as he starts his new journey in heaven.

Shortly after his passing I went walking to clear my mind and get some fresh air. As I reached the crest of the street I saw this beautiful sunset and was reminded of God's glory and new beginnings.

Rest in Peace Dad. We love you:-)

He is very healthy, feeding and sleeping exceptionally well. We have already made it to our first house party and our done our first road trip to North Myrtle Beach. Life is good:-)

Dan and Sarah were super fun to work with. We headed over to the Elizabeth area in Charlotte with their bikes to get some neat urban shots. They have special affinity for cycling as Sarah bought her first bike and met Dan at a bike shop in California. The story unfolds from there.

I had the pleasure of first meeting Sarah as she discharged my father from the hospital at CMC after his seizure. Not even a few months later she was checking out at the store with Dan and we got to talking. I introduced myself and said that I recognized her. We made the connection from the hospital and it turns out Dan works just up the street at Bicycle Sport. And, they were engagement to married in May of 2012 and in need of a wedding photographer. Small world! It gets even smaller.

They hired me and soon thereafter moved in 5 houses down the street from us! They are such nice people, we are lucky to have them as neighbors and I am thrilled to be shooting their wedding.

I am so fortunate to have the opportunity in giving back and sharing my passion by contributing to an AWESOME cause. This is probably the fourth or fifth Muscle Team event I have volunteered for but I am happy to admit that this year I was the official photographer. I also donated a family photo session to the silent auction in helping raise over $250,000 from the event. Most of the monies raised goes to funding reseach but more importantly funding resources and summer camp for children and families challenged by Muscular Dystrophy. It was a huge success and great fun!

Had a much better visit with the oncologist on Wednesday. They are very hopeful that this drug Avastin will starve the tumor and prolong Dad's life. He goes in this morning for a 4 hour infusion. Saying lots of prayers he responds to this drug well and it works. Despite the bad news on Monday from the Radiologist we have had some special days just being together. Dad feels and looks good and seems to be pretty stable at this point.

Cancer f'ing sucks

You want the God's honest truth? Life sucks right now. Above you will see a tumor that has invaded my fathers brain and our lives right now. This is stage IV brain cancer. This abnormality has grown back after a very successfull surgery right before Christmas. It is a rare and aggressive tumor that isn't giving up and neither are we.

More to come soon. We meet with the oncologist tomorrow to discuss further treatment. I pray everyday for a miracle and for God to give me and my family the strength in knowing that he does have a plan despite all this devastation...

The Message

What a whirlwind of events this December and carrying over into the New Year. Dad underwent brain surgery the first week of the month due to an unexpected progressive tumor in the frontal lobe of his brain. This was discovered because of a seizure he had due to the pressure in his brain. Unbelievable that he was able to go home after two days and celebrate Christmas as best as possible. It was great to have Amy and her family there to lighten the mood.

We have been blessed with lots of prayers and support from close friends and family. New Year's was spent with close friends for dinner and a fire outside. Things change in a moments notice.... Mom called this morning and said to get the ER as soon as possible. My heart skipped a beat and my stomach dropped to the ground. Sarah reminded me of my famous mantra "just breathe".

Dad suffered from another more serious seizure but they are optimistic in his recovery again. I said many prayers today in hopes that all of us will find strength and peace in knowing that God has a plan. We have to stay hopeful and remain as optimistic as possible.

Aunt Fran was kind enough to send us "The Message" which I have been given before. This time I will take it to heart and spend more time in understanding the message and strengthening my relationship with Christ. My good friend Mike motivated me to dig out my 2nd grade rosary when I got home tonight.

God's Grace

At Watershed this weekend Scott shared a message in the niche series that hit home with me after a very special weekend.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 "Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are

handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is

wonderful.

I truly felt like I was in God's grace this past weekend celebrating the wedding of Laura and Daniel. After the reception we headed up on the Blue Ridge Parkway for some special couple photos. The scenery was beautiful with snow capped mountains and incredible lighting. While getting ready to pack up and head home another couple got out of their car to admire the beauty and just walk around. Little did we know what was in store for us.

Dan and Jackie introduced themselves and kindly asked if I would take some photos of them and I said sure. We started to get to know each other and I asked what their relationship was. Dan said "well Rudy it's funny you should ask". He proceeded to pull a box out of his pocket and get down on one knee. Jackie was in tears and I was having trouble holding back while taking photos. It was truly an incredible experience participating in this special life moment. After the session I was just so excited about what happened and knew that it was all in God's hands. I had the biggest smile on my face and knew I was consumed with the glory of God at that very moment.

They were so much fun! Sarah and I hope we can make it to their wedding in Atlanta. Wishing them both a wonderful life together!

MDA Muscle Team Photographer

I have been a longtime volunteer with the MDA (muscular dystrophy association) since Sarah works with them full time. They asked me this year to be the official photographer for their Muscle Team event. That means a few corporate head shots, a committee photo, and a huge party to capture at the Bank of American Stadium. It's a great organization and it puts me in front of some good people while supporting a great cause. Headed out today to shoot the CEO of steel-fab, Ron Sherrill. A quick setup with one light that only took about five minutes. I didn't want to keep him long at all so I was under the gun to get it right quick. I am pleased with the results given the surroundings and equipment.

heard unfortunate news that our dear friends Scott and Mindie lost their dog yesterday to a tragic accident with a car. Griffin was a toy yorkie that was so full of life and love. Andy & Tani Proposal

I had the pleasure of being an active participant in the proposal of Andy to Tani. Andy and I discovered each other on craigslist as he wanted a photographer to capture him proposing to his long time girlfriend who is from Slovakia. We spoke to each other over the phone on Wednesday and set something up for Saturday night in downtown Charlotte.

It went really well and was tons of fun. He met her after work at Johnson and Wales University and as they came out I hit the play button for some music and he got down on one knee. Not only did he propose while I was photographing and the horse and buggy were waiting but he also did in her native tongue. Pretty impressive! Bravo I say. We were off to cruise the city in the buggy and got out for shot photos in and around center city.

They were really easy to get along with and they had fun goofing off and taking pictures. I wish them all the best in their wedding planning and life together.

Telluride Photo Festival with Tim Kemple

There couldn't have been a better time and place to head west for a photography workshop. Fall was at it's peak with a taste of winter as we received some fresh snow in the high country. It made for spectacular camping as well as very dramatic contrast for photos.
I flew into Albuquerque, NM and then headed north 7 hrs. to Telluride to spend 4 days with Tim Kemple. Tim is by far one of the leading commercial photographers in the outdoor industry. His clients include TNF, Prana, Patagonia, and other big hitters in the industry. Being that I love photography and the outdoors I thought this would be a great opportunity in combining the two and seeing what the commercial shoot is really like.
Most commercial photographers make a name for themselves by initially shooting tons of editorial and speculative work for little to no money, especially in this day when everybody and their mother has a DSLR.
I learned much about the business of developing rapport and trust with your clients. This is one of my strengths as I am a customer service expert and it is my job everyday to WOW customers. What I lack right now is the technical skills and direction in which my photography is going.
I had many up's and down's during this workshop as I was the least experienced when it comes to having a commercial portfolio. I also am still discovering what it is that I love to shoot the most. I keep coming back to shooting real, genuine images of people that tell a true story.
My most recent engagement shoot I got some great feedback from a client. "Tani just squeezed out a tear. Love them so far!! Thank you so much for all your help. You were very professional but made us feel so comfortable. Life is good."

I certainly don't know how often I would get that response from a commercial client. I think I'm heading in the right direction. That's it for now. Until next time enjoy this beautiful Fall weather!

What do I like to shoot?

That is a very hard question. The short answer is anything and everything. I consider this to be a great strength but also a common weakness. I have so many interests and hobbies which creates a little conundrum in many aspects of my life. Which direction do I go? I've been better lately about listening to that inner voice and seeking counsel from both my spouse and God. It terms of the direction I head in photography it is this I know: I love photographing people. My photography is an extension of who I am and my own convictions. I want my images to honestly and beautifully tell the personal story of the people I am photographing. Thanks for sharing your life's moments with me.

They are a cute couple that compliment each other very well. Andy is easy going and has a great sense of humor. He was quick to get Amy laughing and smiling for the camera. Amy wasn't shy at all in front of the camera-- very photogenic with her huge smile. I think these shots show her sense of adventure as well as her very soft and caring demeanor. It was almost like a double date with having Sarah there to help along with the shoot. I don't think if could have gone any better.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Rogers home in Waxhaw. They recently adopted this beautiful Guatemalan girl and wanted to update their family photos. Upon arrival I was greeted by 3 very friendly children and 3 dogs that were eager to play and have fun. I knew this was going to be really fun. I love being around children and I think they respond to me very well. I just sat down outside and began talking with them and getting to know them. I developed a quick rapport and then starting playing with the dogs and playing fetch. They quickly learned I was there to have fun which opened up the opportunity to break out the camera for some candid photos. I really do enjoy this style of photography, getting to know people in the comfort of their home and capturing who they are.

Jim and I headed out to the USNWC for the Banff film festival and come to find out I got the date wrong. We cruised around the park and checked out all the features without water and stumbled on Patrick doing some trials. He was kind enough to let us try but the only footage worth showing is him doing his thing. Shot on the Canon 7D and pulled from Aperture 3 into iMovie. Not bad for a first clip.

First official engagement shoot

I had the pleasure of shooting engagement photos for Mike and Karen, both great friends of Sarah and I. I am also shooting their wedding in June so this was awesome to combine both together and get comfortable with each other and photographing them. Sarah came along to generate some rapport in getting Karen in front of the camera for an official shoot. She felt silly and nervous until we got warmed up and gave them positive reinforcement. Mike did an awesome job getting his fiance' laughing and feeling better in front of the camera. A nice spring day uptown with a simple scrim we're all happy with the results.

Coffee n Strobes

I got connected with the local photography group, Charlotte photography meet-up. The first event was a workshop about off camera flash in a closed coffee shop. Great people and great fun! I would definitely suggested linking up with a group of this nature in your area. I have already made some great contacts and learning a bunch from other people who are also very passionate about photography.

The next morning we met up for coffee and just shooting the breeze about photography and all the facets it involves. Both of these shots were done thanks to Scott providing the Alien Bee 800 and a real nice octobox.

Barber Shop Shoot

My first attempt at a commercial shoot for a new upscale barber shop in uptown charlotte call The Cut Barber Shop. I rented the 17-55MM lens from Canon which I really enjoying using. I also brought along my portable light stand with 580 speedlite and umbrella. That didn't go over so well and I'm not really sure why. There was a lot on my mind trying to coordinate ideas, people, and exposure for shots so I bagged the flash after a few failed attempts. Bummer, because I know the additional lighting would have added a lot to the images. He found me on craigslist as a TFP (trade for print). He gets free images and I get lots of practice, exposure, and about 3 keepers for my portfolio. I think they will be happy with the final results. Bringing on the 5 in 1 scrim definitely helped out.

Rocky Mtn. School of Photography Workshop

In Atlanta this weekend for a workshop with the Rock Mtn. School of Photography. On lunch break for a quick recap. Good instructors and valuable information. Biggest area of help in regards to correct exposure and metering.

The metering Mantra (using spot metering)

1. Meter for Average Tones in reflected areas and set tick mark to 0

2. Check Highlights

3. Adjust shutter speed or aperture accordingly.

Easy enough. I like the simplicity and effectiveness of this method.

Building a website

So.... It's been quite a process trying to get a website up and running for my photography. I just want something simple, effective, and sharp looking. How difficult can this be? It proved to be very frustrating for me in finding the right tool and resource.

After a good bit of time experimenting with Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Blogger, Wordpress and consulting web designers I have decided to go with Photo Identities. For $399 I think this will be my best option not having to deal with FTP, code, css style sheets and all the other nonsense that I don't feel like spending time to figure out.

Despite temperatures being in the teens this week I headed out for some clear and cold shots both in the early morning and late evening. I adjusted the shutter speed a few stops on each shot to process HDR images using the Hydra plug-in for Aperture.

Well, my 30D motor drive crapped out just before Marty's wedding so I pulled the trigger and got the 7D. Super stoked.... Super broke. Fortunately, I had purchased an extended warranty thru Square Trade and they were AWESOME to work with and replace the motor drive. So now Sarah has a camera to use and we have a back up if shit hits the fan.

Here are some recent images I've shot. I am super ready to shoot any work available to me. In the meantime these are just some images cruising around town.

It's been quite some time since I've last posted and I'm now writing as I'm feeling inspired by reading other photographers blogs. I've been admiring the work of many notable photographers recently and the short list includes Zack Arias, Joe McNally, Planet Neil, Joey Lawrence, Tim Kemple, and Adam Barker. These resources have proven to be invaluable while I create and chart my path in how market myself as a photographer.

To date I've shot 5 weddings as the official photographer and other small jobs for portrait shots. I'm still shooting anything and everything that my eyes are drawn to in attempt to get as much practice and learning as possible. We'll see where it takes me. I'm still very passionate and enraptured in this journey of art as a way of expressing myself and the joy I find in this world. Thanks for checking out my images. I must say, there probably isn't a better opportunity to bond with your new in-laws than heading out to the country to go hunting. The day after Thanksgiving I headed out with all the boys from Myrtle Beach to Bladenboro, NC. to the Allen Brothers farm and preserve. After rolling through scenic country roads, we arrived on their beautiful family run farm some 70 miles from the beach.

Our pack of 10 (3 generations starting at the age of 3) eagerly exited the van with Ron Allen standing there with a warm greeting and a firm handshake. A very strong grip that reminded me it's been too long since I got my hands dirty for some good ole' fashioned strong-armed fun! Ron showed us our quarters in the lodge that smelled of freshly harvested wood. The accomoations were simple, rustic and clean.

The children were quick to check out the entertainment area, to play pool and to study all the stuffed animals that added to the credibility of this place. I was very surprised to learn that their were bobcats on the property among coyote, deer, pheasants, duck, quail, turkey, grouse, and probably many others. The kids headed outside to release some energy, play in the hay bail area and check out the cattle and other farm animals. Ron's son-in-law and his daughter Sander kindly offered to give us the grand tour of this magnificent 1500 acre property.

After touring the chicken and pig pens, we came to understand that this place was not just a hunting preserve but a fully operational farm. Wow! Quite an impressive facility. We made our way to the water fowel area, tower shoot, lodge, and shooting range. Just before sunset we set up target practice so the young bucks could get a chance to fire the guns (many for the first time).

After sunset, Ron and friends fired up the stoves to get the oysters going. We enjoyed beers with our dinner outside before heading back to the lodge to warm our bones beside the fire. On our walk back one of the older teenagers, Reece said "boy, I hope these Allen brothers know how could they got it out here. I'm sure they do... Just look around".

Everyone enjoyed the comradarie around the fire. Ron made us feel truly at home and continued to toss more logs into the steel chimney to keep it stoked. We were all anxious for the hunt tomorrow and retired for the evening.

Roe and Larson rose at 5:30 for deer hunting while the rest of us met for an awesome country breakfast at 7:30. The blessing was said before digging into a meal that was sure to keep us warm and full. We were heading out on a cold, rainy, winter day. I was certainly cherishing my Smartwool undergarments, socks, and hat at this point in the game. I am not a hunter but definitely an avid outdoorsmen; I was staying nice and comfortable--warm and dry.

We loaded up with all our preparations before Ron introduced us to the guides who gave a very informative safety speech. Before I knew it we were off to the water for my first actual duck 'hunt'.

For those that didn't bring their waders, the guides kindly shuttled us through the water to our respective blinds. It was indeed a beautiful area--I soaked in the peace and quiet admist this picturesque hunting day. Everyone was ready and it wasn't long before that first crack and Sam called his beautiful labrador, Onyx to retrieve our first catch. I did not have a hunting licesne so I was merely observing. That doesn't mean I wasn't a participant -- experiencing the hunt vicariously thru my new 'kin'. I looked over to the next blind and saw my brother-in-law Roe with his three sons. I knew this was the making of a very special holiday.

Everyone bagged their limit and we headed back for an exceptional lunch with fresh chicken and homemade sides. The ducks were cleaned while others watched college football and told hunting stories present, past, and future. We were already looking forward to our next return to the Allen brothers farm. It was more than I expected.

All of the accomodations, facilities, and people were truly genuine. The experience was the epitome of a classic hunting preserve that I had always envisioned. Being the naturlist that I am, the only reservation about the experience was that it wasn't in the wild or in the forest. Although I certainly understand that this preserve's goal is to accomodate both new and young hunters. The Allen Brothers provide a haven seeking the opportunity to learn and understand the safety and basics of this sport that has captivated generations.

We left feeling well worn and tired after a great outing in the woods. Later that evening when we returned home, we had many fresh duck breasts to share with the rest of the family. One of the guides suggested a simple marinade with the breasts rolled in bacon over a hot grill. It sure was good, can't wait for more.

A Day on the Davidson

I had the distinct pleasure to go fishing on the Davidson River near Brevard, NC with Caleb Boyle. Caleb was recently selected to join the ranks of the youth world fly-fishing team. He traveled to Penacova, Portugal this past August to compete in the championships.

I met Caleb a few years ago while working at Great Outdoor Provision Company as he often came in to purchase select fly-tying materials and share his fishing experience and knowledge. Not only is Caleb a skilled fisherman but an award winning fly-tyer. His flies and writing have been featured in several issues of Fly Tier and once were showcased for sale at the GOPC in Charlotte, NC.

Finally, I had the opportunity to go fishing with Caleb. We chose to hit the Davidson river, one of Caleb's favorite catch and release streams located about 2.5 hours from Charlotte, NC. We geared up for a chilly November day and talked of different fishing tactics and feeding properties on this particular river.

Caleb graciously handed me a flybox packed full of hand tied special nymph (subsurface) midges. My eyes widened and I picked some colorful options in the size 20 to 24 range for the classic "slack" water section just beyond the parking at the fish hatchery.

Being out of practice and my feet slow to warm I experimented with different strike indicator options and midges until I had my first hook-up. Game was on for some healthy size trout feeding in this particular stretch of river. I was using a special "competition" indicator rig that Caleb showed me and tied two tiny simple little midges on 7x flourocarbon tippet. Skunk was soon gone and I was getting into the rythm. Indeed, it was going to be a good day on the water!

School was in session as Caleb and Carl had several more hookups and landings. I attentively listened and watched for any tips and tricks I could put to immediate use . Several more hookups and a few breakoffs from larger fish and my heartrate was beginning to rise. Game on!

I cruised upstream to explore some other holes but not near the success I had in the slower moving water. The water was low and fast; the wind blistering it's way down river to make casting and obtaining a drag-free drift far more difficult. I cruised to the car for some refreshments before heading back to the slack water where all those pigs were penned up. I came back and found Carl and Caleb still slaying the fish. They weren't having to force feed these fish.

I cleaned up my leader and tied on two different flies in anticipation for some heavy hitters. Before I knew it, my line was tight. The bright red colors flashed and I knew I was going to need n' hold on. I called Caleb over for some backup and hopefully a potential net. This gorgeous rainbow jumped but it was more like the breaching of a whale. This was by far the largest trout I had ever hooked into. I was ecstatic and proceeded to do my best at playing this tough, frightful fish.

Caleb saw the jump and shouted "Carl, you've gotta come and see this fish". Before I knew it the fish headed for cover and broke me off. I could have screamed like I normally do when I loose big fish. Instead, I looked at Caleb and we both grinned. I tied on another midge and when back after him. Hint: use slightly larger tippet (6x) next time when going for large trout.

To no avail I was very content to pack up the gear and head home. Caleb ended the day on a great note pulling in a great size bow. A perfect way to end the day. It was a spectacular day of winter fishin' and got me excited to tie some up and go back after 'em.

Couple Gets Caught Naked in Costa Rica

It seems as though these honeymooners were caught off guard while swimming in the nude off of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. While enjoying a relaxing swim they realized they were not alone. Natives of that part of the world were soon upon them. Were they shocked? Of course! And delighted to see a Toucan, black faced monkey, other tropical birds, fish and even a sloth on their adventure. Learn more about this georgeous part of the world and this couple's experience in Costa Rica.....

Costa Rica is a vast land with to plenty to see and do! From rolling countryside, volcanoes, deserted beaches and friendly locals you are sure to have a fantastic travel experience visiting this country. Pura Vida they say! Es muy tranquilo!

We chose Costa Rica as a destination for our honeymoon for it's close proximity to the states and the ability to surround yourself in areas with very diverse flora and fauna as well as an abundance of wildlife. We encountered numerous species of monkeys, birds, fish, and other mammals including the two and three toed sloth. Costa Rica invigorated our sense of life being immersed in a land so in touch with all it's living creatures.

We were continually greeted with "holas and buenos" as local ticos and native carribbeans were very welcoming. A smile and willingless to learn the language carried us far into the lives and stories of this simple friendly heritage. For Sarah and I this is the heart and soul of traveling. Or as I would say, "The University of Life".

An 11 day stint traveling to La Fortuna, Cahuita, and Puerto Viejo gave us the ability to soak in the culture and arts of each different area in a short amount of time. Time and weather permitted, we would have love to have ventured to the Pacific coast to check out Manuel Antonio as well as the less traveled, more remote Osa Peninsula. Or for that matter Tortuguero or Bocas Del Toro on the Carribean coast.

From horseback riding, canopy tours, fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, biking and hanging out with locals we experienced each area to it's fullest in a short amount of time. For ease of travel we used Interbus and local taxis to tour these three separate areas. At no point did our travel time exceed more than 5 hours from one area to the other.

We especially enjoyed the nature and beauty of the rainforests and the wide-open, secluded beaches. All of the food and drink were to die for and I particularly appreciated watching the effort and simplicity of providing and making food thru the use of their own labor, tools, and ingenuity. Everything is local--right from the sea or jungle!

My least favorite part of traveling in Costa Rica was witnessing all the poverty and trash but evidently C.R doesn't have nearly the problem that many other countries in Latin America have. It certainly is a very REAL place--what you see is what you get. Friendly natives and a relatively undiscovered area with many treasures. Enjoy!

Beautiful day for a ride. Ran into old-timer Vick chainsawing down a hugeass tree by himself. Couldn't help but take a break in my ride and help him out. It made for a good all encompassing cruise on the backyard trails in South Charlotte. Thanks to Vick and the Trailblazers for keeping the trails riding like love.

A little different Bachelor Party

Being that I love the outdoors I figured no better place to celebrate a bachelor party than in the mountains. Myself and 17 close friends rented a cabin on the new river in Crumpler, NC, just 2.4 hours from Charlotte. I found the cabin Picture Perfect thru 4 Seasons Vacation Rental and Sales.

This was an excellent choice as we had plenty of wide open space to play horseshoes, bachiball, fish, and just chill down by the river. Several folks were first introduced to the game of STUMP. This simple yet very fun game only requires a stump, hammer, nails, and some nice cold beer. We opted to stay at the cabin instead of go canoeing since the river was so low. This worked out perfectly for some good ole' times with the fellas. We had just the perfect weather, accomodations, and best company.

Before getting to the cabin several of us played golf right outside of Jefferson at Mountain Aire Golf Course. A very scenic and hilly course but definitely recommended for a mountain course only 2 hours from Charlotte, NC.

The Finished Product

After much delay and lots of shooting I have a finished product to print. A big print at that for a good friend in his uptown condo. It's going to be a 4ft. x 6ft. taking up an entire wall that Kenny's Color Laboratory is producing in Charlotte, NC. They are very helpful and do exceptional work!

This photo is a quite a reference point for my progression in photography. I only consider myself a self taught, serious amateur but take great pride in making people happy and offering great service.
This picture and post will illustrate my experience of learning photography and attempting to capture classics in a snap (much easier said than done). My passion and love for photography began while exploring nature and adventure in the outdoors. For me photography encapsulates so many different aspects of everyday life that I wish to capture: people, places, adventure, beauty, stories, emotion, feeling, and perspective.

As music can bring back certain nostalgia and feeling to take you back in time, so do photographs of special moments that represent the perfect light, composition, style, and expression. My progession of learning these basic skills has enabled me to develop a certain rapport and demeanor with my subjects and landscapes that is a very rewarding experience. Stoked to have a sweet bike up and running again. It's a KONA unit single speed. I commute, cruise, and hit the local singletrack on it. It is so much fun! Marty hooked me up with a fixed cog made by Tomi so I have either option by flipping the back wheel around. I also love this quote that Marty turned me onto in regards to our cycling addiction.

A Zen teacher once asked his students why they rode bicycles. One said he rode to carry potatoes. Another cycled to observe the world. A third said it cleared the mind, and a fourth said cycling put him in harmony with all sentient beings. The Zen master was pleased, but when the fifth replied, "I ride my bicycle to ride my bicycle," the teacher sat at the student's feet and said, "I am your student."

A good day to FLY...

T minus a few hours before Sarah and I have our first skydiving experience with Skydive Carolina. Jack and Amy are so excited for us to join them in their newfound passion. I've just started to feel the butterflies only because I'm getting very excited for an AWESOME day.

I'm not sure what Sarah is feeling, I know we both will be freaking out as we fly up and the door opens. I once heard that you never really want to get rid of the buttterflies you just want to try and get them lined up in some kind of reasonable order. We'll see how that works as we both practice our special breathing exercises as we gain 14,000 feet.

I'll be sure to give a report post freefall and add some photos. Evidently the whole trip from start to finish is going to be videotaped. I'll certainly try to manipulate the footage to get some of it on the web. Stay tuned....

Well..... it was a total success and highly recommended. Our photos and DVD's are awesome and as Amy said we would burn em' up. Sarah and I have already re-played our DVD's numerous times for ourselves, friends, and family. A must do to relive the experience in the comfort of your own home.

We got there, signed the numerous waiver forms and then had a very simple and short (15min.) training. They just show you a video that shows the process and what to do. You really have to do nothing at all other than commit yourself to doing it. After the training we waited around and watched other folks pre and post jump. I took lots of photos to calm the edge and absorb all the details. I ran into my friend Eric who is FFA trained and jumps all the time. He showed and explained the chute packing process and talked about his passion for skyiving. He said once your trained you pay $26 per flight to 14,000 feet. Not too bad he said in comparison for paying $80 for a round of golf. Hmmm... he got me to thinking....

We continued to wait and were pushed back to load #10. The fun jumpers that were trained would jump and then hit the ground running to pack up and do it over and over again. You could see and feel all the energy and excitement beneath the airplane hanger. Patiently, we became a little more acclimated to the overall experience. Jack said it certainly might feel different if we were to show up, do our 15min. training and then hop right on the plane. I would concur.

So after waiting several hours it was our turn to get suited up and ready to board the plane. Once they started putting our harnesses on they turned the video camera on to really capture our every expression. I'll have to admit Sarah and I really hammed it up for the camera and she says that was part of her focus to stay calm and relaxed. She looked like an old pro ready to fly.

We boarded the plane and anxiously awaited as we climbed almost 3 miles in the sky. We were literally and figuratively, shooting the breeze. Jumpers were video taping, interviewing newbies, and snapping stills and really trying to envoke a sense of fear. Sarah and I were still hamming it up and ready to jump. The door opened up and people just starting flying out.

The most nervous part (as many of us agree on this) was edging your way to the door. Once you got to the door we were instructed to grab our shoulder straps on the harness while the instructor rocked back and forth three times to get gain some momentum. Once you exited the plane were we then able to spread open and fly like an eagle. We had approx. 45 to 60 seconds of freefall. It is quite a sensation with sensory overload. My eyes were really tearing up and my ears were popping from the altitude. I tried to gain my composure, relax, and smile for the camera. At approximately 5,200 feet the instructor pulled the chute and then the tranquility and peace overcame me. It was very peaceful and quite to float thru the air and control your direction of travel with the toggle straps connected to the chute. We had about 6 minutes of play time in the air with our chutes open before preparation for the landing. I was only hoping it would last just a little longer.

Everybody landed safely. Jack, Amy, Sarah, and I grouped together for a high-five and a group photo. What an incredible experience and is almost indescribable. I was ready for more....

Kayaking my first River--Ocoee

Paul, Dan, and I left Charlotte headed for Hiwassee Outfitters to meet up with Kevin where they were camping. About 5.25 hrs. later we arrived at Reliance Fly & Tackle. It was certainly hard to find in the dark well after midnight. Fortunatley, we showed up to camp with a warm welcome of cold beer and a nice campfire. We slept well and were anxious for our first kayaking experience on the Ocoee river in TN.

We woke to a nice campground just beside a stream. Bathrooms, showers, breakfast, and internet service at Reliance Fly and Tackle made for some nice car camping accomodations. We packed up and headed for the river. Paul was kind enough to escort 4 beginners down their first river. Grumpies sure gave us a run for our money right at the start. It made for an interesting warmup and a must-do combat roll. Despite two more swims later in the day it was an excellent and successful first run.

Land Celebration Day--Catawba Lands Conservancy

Climbing in Linville Gorge--Table Rock

Drew and I headed up to Linville to climb some traditional routes on table rock. We had the place to ourselves and headed over to the Northeast Ridge Area. We climbing several classic routes over in that direction but none as aesthetic as True Grit to White Lightning. This is a gorgeous line that is well protected at a sustained 5.8. These pictures are of Drew headed off the belay of the second pitch for White Lightning. Great climbing day!
